Mit Hilfe der AVEC-DIC (Allen Video-enhanced Contrast, Differential Interference Contrast) Mikroskopie können kleine Strukturen im lebenden Cytoplasma der Zelle beobachtet werden, die durch konventionelle lichtmikroskopische Methoden nicht aufgelöst werden: Dünne Cisternen und Elemente des ER mit einem Durchmesser von weniger als 100 nm und Bündel von Aktinfilamenten.
