The Three Folksongs, op. 49 were composed in 1948 and were published the following year by Edward B. Marks in New York. The underlying melodies in opus 49 are based on modal 15th- and 16th-century compositions that are detached from major/minor tonalities.
The live recording took place on March 19, 1950 as part of the Music Educators National Conference in the Jefferson Hotel, St. Louis. The USC Madrigal Singers, established in 1939 at Schönberg’s former university, were conducted by Charles C. Hirt, who was head of the church music department at the university’s School of Performing Arts. Schönberg taught composition at USC from 1935 to 1936. (Text: Arnold Schönberg Center)
