Eduard Steuermann was the leading pianist in the Viennese School. Schönberg underlines his great appreciation of his former student in a letter to Willem Mengelberg dated October 12, 1920: “Steuermann, with whom you are acquainted; he played my Pierrot in the early days, and since then his development as a musician and virtuoso performer has been unbelievable. In any case, nobody plays my pieces like him: intellectually and technically; a contemplator, but with the greatest expertise, earnestness and an outstanding sense of sound.” Steuermann’s discography is mainly filled with the works of Arnold Schönberg. His studio recordings include “Pierrot lunaire,” conducted by the composer, and also Schönberg’s works for solo piano (released by Columbia Masterworks). In March 1948 Steuermann recorded the piano pieces at the Juilliard School in New York; these recordings have been preserved on non-commercial records in Schönberg’s Estate. “Schönberg’s last two works for solo piano, op. 33a (1929) and op. 33b (1932) published at different times, have no other title than Klavierstück. Op. 33a reunites the most heterogeneous expressions, but without the wildness of the former expressionism – rather borne by an underlying cantabile spirit.” (Eduard Steuermann, 1957) (Text: Arnold Schönberg Center)
