Among the performers of the world premiere recording of Schönberg’s “Gurre-Lieder” in 1932 was, in addition to Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra, Rose Bampton. The then 25-year-old soprano interpreted the vocally challenging “Song of the Wood-Dove.” Schönberg later met the singer during his American exile and was impressed by her extraordinary abilities. In 1949 Bampton – by then star of the Metropolitan Opera – contacted the composer from a hotel in San Francisco while passing through: “On December fourth I am to sing for the Friends of Music in New York, your Fifteen verses from ‘The book of the hanging gardens.’ […] Would it be possible for you to find some time […] when you could speak with me about these songs, and perhaps hear them, and so guide me?”
For the concert (Town Hall, New York) and recording, the soprano was accompanied by the pianist and composer Erich Itor Kahn, who had escaped to the US in 1941 and was living in exile in New York. The third song begins with the line of verse “Als Neuling trat ich ein in dein Gehege” (As a novice, I entered your enclosure). Kahn lends the dotted eighth note piano figures a gesture of initial hesitance, leading into a feeling of steady onward movement. Bampton creates huge intensification of this motion, producing a precise realization of the caesuras that Schönberg had only written in his autograph – perhaps as a consequence of the meeting in Los Angeles.
