Hiroshima, Mon Amour: The Cure by Love

aus der Festschrift Zehn Jahre Depot, diverse Autoren, http://www.depot.or.at/files/depot_10jahre.pdf: At the beginning of Marguerite Duras and Alain Resnais film Hiroshima, Mon Amour a French woman tells a Japanese architect that, as a result of looking at various documents attesting to the nuclear bombing, she has »seen« Hiroshima. He responds that she has seen nothing. The Japanese architect seems thereby to confirm our contemporary belief that history belongs exclusively to those who have experienced it. Duras and Resnais think otherwise. They help us to understand that this is not because she has no right to look at Hiroshima, but rather because she has not yet made it her own.
