“Listening hour attendants tomorrow afternoon will have the opportunity of hearing a program of the music of Beethoven and Tschaikowsky on a newly perfected high-fidelity record and radio reproducing amplifier developed by William Hansen of Beverly Hills. This machine which Hansen is demonstrating is similar to two he has constructed for Otto Klemperer, conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and Arnold Schoenberg, composer now living in Los Angeles.” (Daily Trojan, February 23, 1937)

From the fall of 1936 until he retired from his professorship in 1944 Schönberg taught at the University of California in Los Angeles. Beethoven played a key role in the pedagogical methods both of the Viennese School and also the Schönberg School in the US. Former students such as Hanns Eisler, Felix Greissle and Leonard Stein gave accounts of how they analyzed Beethoven’s string quartets, piano variations and sonatas, symphonies and instrumental concertos using the criteria of form, harmony and counterpoint. In Schönberg’s textbooks “Structural Functions of Harmony” (1939–48) and “Fundamentals of Musical Composition” (1937–1948) collections of examples from Beethoven’s works are also given significant focus. Knowledge of the repertoire was taught in “Listening Hours” as well as in analytical subjects. (Text: Arnold Schönberg Center)
