Arnold Schönberg’s chorus “Peace on Earth,” op. 13 was written for submission to a competition. The program of the Styrian Music Festival in 1907 consisted of three opera performances and three concert performances, including a celebratory event with the award-winning works from a composition competition. In April 1907, after finishing his work eight days after the final submission date, then preparing the fair copy and sending it off correspondingly late, the composer received a letter from the mayor of Graz which informed him that his choral work had been rejected: “The jury for the choral composition competition held in association with the 1st Styrian Music Festival has completed its perusal and in the final meeting on the 17th of this month decided as follows: your work has not been awarded a prize and will therefore be returned to the address stated by you.” (Franz Graf to Arnold Schönberg, April 20, 1907) (Text: Arnold Schönberg Center)
