Around the year 1920 Max Deutsch participated in Arnold Schönberg’s composition seminar at the Schwarzwald schools and also took lessons privately in Mödling, near Vienna. He was a member of the group of confidants whom Schönberg introduced to the essentials of serial composition in 1922/23. After World War II Deutsch settled in France, where he had been serving in the Foreign Legion. He passed on his knowledge of the Viennese School to hundreds of students as a teacher in Paris, and also promoted Schönberg’s works as a conductor. On February 22, 1950 he gave a concert with members of the Orchestre National de France, performing the “Suite” op. 29 – “A twelve-tone hit, I beg forgiveness for this expression, esteemed maestro.” (Letter dated March 15, 1950) By May of that same year, Deutsch was able to make a disc recording of the piece for the French label Contrepoint. He sent details of the recording to his former teacher: “In the fourth movement I had to choose a careful initial tempo to avoid endangering the cello passage in bars 27 and 28. But the difficult sforzato alternations in the strings and wind turned out excellently […].” (Letter dated May 7, 1950) Indeed, Schönberg remarked in his reply: “[…] in the final movement the second subject group is fast and the beginning is slow, instead of the reverse.
